I just spent approximately 4.5 hours installing a PHP mailing list at the LAF website. It works now, it's themed with the site, it's reasonably secure with htaccess - but oh, programming frustrates me. It's nice when it works right, but it's such a time suck, and getting to the "done and working!" point is always a pain in the ass. It'll be nice to be in a field where I can at least claim that it's not part of my job description. ... Good luck with that, me; because I can, I alway seem to end up doing when it comes to writing code. (P.S. you should all totally sign up for the mailing list.)

My parking ticket appeal got turned down. ExpandI'm whining about it. )

I've got plane tickets for Iceland and the UK! Yay! Now I have to figure out how to get myself from New York to Baltimore on the evening of Sunday, August 23. Baggage is going to be interesting, too - to and from the US, it's limited by number, but between the UK and Iceland, it's by weight. Hmmm.

I hear that UMass has secure FTP access off-campus now, too! I haven't tested it yet. I am sorely behind in my prep reading for this summer ...

And I found my camera. (It was in my car. (Shut up.)) I may post some pictures later, and discuss the bones exhibit, once I cross a few more things off my to-do list.

Okay, CSS:

I know what I said about you yesterday. All is not forgiven. However, I am kind of in love with your "display:none;" function. Oh yes. Just a bit. ♥. (But you're still On Notice.)

Anyway, I polished an antique silver pheasant tonight. How 'bout you guys?

New website!

\o/! That feels good to have done. :D

(Lemme know if something looks funky or needs changed. ... the IJs will of course change to DWs in another month.)

... now I just gotta get going on the LAF one.

Does anyone out there know of a really good site, for explaining really *simple* adjustments to wordpress themes?

I just want to make this blog look vaguely like the main site.

Which means: I want the white bits to be dusky salmon. I want to put a table in the header, with a td background consisting of the red-rocks images (as I managed to do here). (It does have a table now - the image at the top is in the table - but something is canceling out the background image.) I want to *maybe* have the sidebar background also be red rocks.

That's all I want to do. It shouldn't be that difficult.

I know html and css and I'm *trying* to kludge my way through php, but the kludges I'm attempting are not having much of an effect. I haven't even been able to figure out how to move the header-background image to the top of the page (now that I've edited it and made it smaller), or get rid of that annoying red blob.

I am not very pleased that wordpress themes are harder to edit than gallery themes, and I'm sort of wishing I'd just bought an IJ (or a DW) for LAF and embedded it, because I know how to do that.

Sigh.

(Also: this is going to be a multi-user blog. How do I make it show "posted by: [user]" at the top of each post? I don't see it anywhere obvious in the admin area.)

(And, any recs for a posting interface that will be easy to use for someone who doesn't have any blogging experience?)

Ok, I just posted to the official help forum, but I figure I'll ask here too just in case ... I'm having issues with my website, and I think it's due to gallery.

Today I first attempted to upgrade to 2.3 (it said it worked, but it still reports that it installed as 2.2.2). (Actually, it did take issue with the fact that I had replaced the logo with my own image, but it seemed to go fine despite that.)

I also bulk resized every photo to fit in 800x800. It had a couple of errors, but in the end it all worked.

Now the size is 3967.14 megs, and my webspace is redlining. How did it get so huge? Where should I look to find whatever crap is hanging around making it huge?

(I didn't note the size before I started, unfortunately, but I know it wasn't that big - I've done nothing but move, edit text files, and delete stuff on the *rest* of the site, and my disk space was at the safe end of yellow when I looked at it this morning. It's got to be the gallery.)

I resized everything in order to SAVE webspace! This is so annoying.
