Every. Single. Time.

Every single time I need new trompin-around shoes, it goes something like this:

I go to department stores.

I go to shoe stores.

I go to outdoor stores.

I go to the outlet center.

And every store: has never heard of the concept that women might enjoy outdoor activities other than jogging, tennis, and looking cute on the beach; has heard of that concept, but only for ten zillion dollars; and/or has nothing in mens that fits both my price range and my feet.

And so I end up finding something I can live with for $35 in the mens section at Wal-Mart.

Dammit.

Anyway, Mom at least will be pleased to hear that I finally got rid of my old black high-tops with the completely split soles - I donated them to Shoes on the Mall via a guy at work.

That's one thing off my to-buy-before-Iceland list!

What does your price range range? I picked up some Merrell clogs for my London trip last fall for about $80 and they are super comfy and definitely good for hiking around. They've also go some trail runners that get really good reviews.

I absolutely adore them. I've got knee and hips issues so I have to be incredible particular about my shoes and I want them to last because I hate buying shoes so I usually end up forking over money for shoes that are going to last forever.

I've usually gotten excellent wear out of my super-cheap shoes, oddly enough! (Though the Kmart ones from long ago were better than the Walmart ones.)

(Also, note that I tend to be kind of a cheapskate.)

I remember that the Keds I used as a kid lasting forever. I'm actually thinking abuot going back to those (or a similar thin canvas shoe) for working out because I've been coming across a lot of studies showing that expensive tennis shoes are actually bad for you when it comes to a lot of walking and running. I ended up with the clogs because I wanted something slightly dressy for the trip adn that I could wear to work.

Yeesh! You live in the wrong part of the country, I think. The West Coast is calling to you...

You ever consider something like Shoebuy.com? I was a little leery about it, but it actually worked out pretty well for me. Free shipping, free returns. Good prices and selection. Might be worth a try.
