So: There are three major, extant mansions in the vicinity of Leesburg that are open to the public for tours.
In 1901, Edith Eustis and her husband William moved into Oatlands. She lived there until she died in 1964.
In 1903, Marguerite Davis and her husband Westmoreland moved into Morven Park. Morley died in 1942, but Meg more-or-less stayed there till 1950.
In 1941, Katherine Marshall and her husband George bought Dodona Manor for a summer home. They moved in for good around 1950, and stayed at least until George died in 1959.
These ladies were all made of 100% pure concentrated awesome. Kate was a Shakespearian actress in London before she met George and settled down (there are photos of her at the mansion that are just incredible). Meg liked to throw parties, smoke, drink, play cards, and foxhunt. And Edith - Edith had this portrait painted when she was in Europe, which scandalized the entire community for years. (All of them also liked to garden. And politics.)
I want to write stories about them being awesome together in 1940s Leesburg, with possible Madame Chiang for extra, added awesome.
But OMG, the research and the lack of audience.
Sigh.
